Coronado Girls Cross Country

2008 Outlook

The 2008 team should improve significantly upon their record of last year.  The Cougars lost only two (to graduation) of their top ten runners and should be replacing those two (Liz Martin & Sarah Medina) with a host of newcomers.  The most notable newcomers include Angela Vitulli, a senior transfer from Pennsylvania, Hailey Hauser a sophomore from El Paso Texas and a bevy of talented freshman from Holmes, Jenkins and West Middle Schools.

Hannah Green is back for her senior year and running better than ever.  Hannah dropped nearly one minute from her 3200 meter time this spring and demonstrated that she is one of the regions best.  Earlier this summer she smashed the girls 15 – 19 age group record at the Garden of the Gods Ten Mile race, running just over 69 minutes and taking six minutes off the old record.  Hannah went on to break age groups records at the Salin' Shoes 10K and the 12K Round Up Run.  Lauren Young and Bailey Gearhart had exceptional track seasons and their improvement should help the Cougars in their quest for a trip to the State Meet.  Add, soccer player, Kaeli Vandersluis to the mix and Coronado looks significantly stronger than a year ago.

Several others will be seeking a spot on the varsity.  Rosie Bradley is training through the summer and therefore looks to have an inside track.  But don’t overlook Emily Martin, Kaitlin Mayle, Megan Trujillo, Christy Garrett, Jill Brinkman, Clare Hammond.  Given all the new additions and recent surprises, look for the Cougars to have ten runners under 22 minutes.

Our region should, for the second straight year, be dominated by Palmer.  Palmer lost only two seniors from their third place (State) team and has a host of younger runners waiting to fill in the gaps.  Air Academy lost only two top runners to graduation and could hold onto the number two spot; especially with assistance from senior Allie McLaughlin who is (by far) the top distance runner in the region.  Doherty and Pine Creek will be tough, but look for Coronado, Mountain Vista to give them a good race.

Coronado’s region might look a little different this fall as several teams move down to the 4A classification and a couple moved up from 4A.
