Coronado Boys Cross Country

2008 Outlook

You’d think that a team that graduates seven of their top ten runners might consider the upcoming season to be a “rebuilding” year.  But those remaining three veterans might argue that perspective.  Dusty Solis, Andrew Hugill and Jesse Mathews will make up one of the best trios in the Pikes Peak area.  So, considering that the top three spots are fairly solid, the key to the Cougar’s 2008 success lies in who “steps up” to fill the fourth and fifth spots and how good of a job they do in helping us to forget about all of those great seniors we had last year..

Junior, Dusty Solis is destined to be one of the areas top runners (for any distance above 400 meters) this year and the next.  Look for some intriguing races between Wes Rickman (Falcon), Brandon Jarvis (Rampart), Andrew Goodman (Palmer), Kevin Johnson (Falcon) and of course Dusty.  And, look for Jesse Mathews and Andrew Hugill to be nipping at their heels.

But it takes more than just three runners to get the team to the State Championships.  Coronado will be looking for help from at least two others and will therefore be looking for Dylan Witte, Ryan Logan, Ben Vaske, Mile Roth, Zach Spiker, Andrew Joynton and Chuck Voss to step up their efforts and fill the void.  New comer Hayden Johnson could also prove to provide some of the fire power needed to make this team a great team.

Rampart will again be the “team to beat” in our Region, as they return four top runners  from their 2007 team.  It’s not clear who Rampart will find for their fifth runner, but you can be fairly certain that they’ll find someone who can help keep them in contention.  Count on Palmer to have two good runners and three others who can dip under 18 minutes.  It looks like they’ll have a slight edge over Coronado but this edge can easily vanish if the Cougars can step up and adequately fill those key fourth and fifth spots.  Lewis-Palmer looked as if they could provide some fireworks in the team battle, but rumor has it that L-P is moving back (down) to the 4A classification.  We’ll have to wait a few weeks to see how our region comes together.  With all of the changes in the 4A and 5A classification, who knows who we might discover in our regional meet in mid October.

Projected Finish @ Regional Championship

  1. Rampart
  2. Palmer
  3. Coronado
  4. Durango
